CONSTRUCTION COMPLETE – NOW LET’S CELEBRATE!
Prescott Area Habitat for Humanity and the Mingus Mountain Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans recently dedicated the completion of our 2008 Thrivent Builds Homes project in Diamond Valley, AZ.

(July 29, 2008) – Prescott Area Habitat for Humanity (PAHH) and the Mingus Mountain Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans have accomplished what they set out to do seven months ago—build a home with a local deserving family.  Ashley Darling with Baby

On Sunday, July 27, at 2:00 P.M., a Dedication Ceremony was celebrated by PAHH staff, Board, committee members, and volunteers, Thrivent Financial representatives, Thrivent Chapter Board members, Lutheran pastors and volunteers, and the excited Darling family at Prescott’s American Evangelical Lutheran Church. The hard work, generous financial backing, and community support that made this home possible were acknowledged with gusto.

The Dedication Ceremony program was followed by a “social” in the church fellowship hall and an open house at the home on Lapis Drive.  Homebuyer Ashley Darling and her daughter, Gwen, are eager to move into their new home in the coming days.  With the help of family, friends, and other PAHH home applicants, Ashley completed 262 hours of “sweat equity” helping to build her home, a basic tenet of Habitat for Humanity.  She will repay the no-profit mortgage over a period of 30 years, illustrating Habitat for Humanity’s objective to give families a “hand up” rather than a “hand out.”

The new home is a result of the recent alliance between Habitat for Humanity International and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.  Called Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity, the alliance is a four-year, $125 million commitment by Thrivent Financial that includes plans to construct hundreds of homes across the country each year. Its goal this year is to build 324 houses in 42 states, of which the Thrivent Builds – PAHH house was the only non-metropolitan grant in Arizona, The alliance is also engaging hundreds of thousands of volunteers in Habitat for Humanity builds, promoting short-term volunteer home building trips abroad, and providing large grants to measurably improve substandard housing in specific neighborhoods.  The Darling home is PAHH’s second construction project with Thrivent Builds Homes, and it is PAHH’s 49th home since its founding in 1989.

“We’re so thankful for the tremendous work that the Prescott Area Habitat for Humanity does, as well as the incredible generosity shown by the community,” said Ryan Albert, who oversees the region’s projects for Thrivent. “In working with our Thrivent Builds Homes in the Southwest US for the past two years, I can honestly say I haven’t seen the kind of effort duplicated anywhere that has been shown in Prescott.
